April 26th

Amanda was whining again. She hated this place. It was always raining, and there was nothing interesting to see, and the people were weird looking, and there were no cute guys. Spending a week in Europe had sounded cool last week in class, but now that she and her mom were here she hated it.

Maybe things would be better on Sunday when they went to Paris, but this little town in Germany was just dull. She knew that her brother Andrew loved living here, but he was boring too. All that time studying and practicing for the band in high school, then spending his sophomore year of college as an exchange student in boring Germany was just the kind of nerdy thing that he would enjoy. Her freshman year of high school she'd pretended she didn't even know him: she didn't want anyone to know that the Nerd King of the senior class was her brother. And when she'd bragged to the girls in class that she was missing school to go to Europe, she hadn't even wanted to mention Drew.

"God, this is boring!" she whined. She threw herself across the hotel bed, noticing the lumps and making a subconscious note to complain about that too later, when her mother was here to hear it. She tried the television again, but there were still only six channels and nothing in English. "Don't they even have MTV in this crappy country?" she complained aloud before turning it off.

"Hi, Mandy," her mom's voice said from the doorway. "Too bad you didn't want to come to the park with us. It was wonderful."

"But it's raining." The sarcastic whine in Amanda's voice was strong.

"Well, that made it more romantic."

"Ewwww, yuck, Mom. You were with your son."

"The place was romantic," her mother said. "Anyway, we're on our own tonight. Drew has an orchestra rehearsal. But tomorrow night we're having dinner with him and his host family before the concert, and I expect you to be nice to them. Nice and friendly."

Amanda flopped back and sighed heavily, voicing her displeasure indirectly though she didn't dare complain openly. "I will."

"So, what do you want to do tonight?" her mother asked.
